Have you ever given someone a high five and felt a little burst of happiness? Or maybe after a big win, your team celebrated with high fives all around? Well, guess what—high fives aren’t just fun, they’re powerful! And they are one of my favourite things to do.
Scientists have discovered that high fives can make you feel happier, more confident, and even help you do better in school or sports. You can even high five yourself (yep, really!) and feel the benefits. Want to know how? Let’s find out!
1. High Fives Make You Feel Happy
When you high five someone, your brain releases dopamine and oxytocin—two chemicals that help you feel good.
• Dopamine gives you energy and makes you feel excited.
• Oxytocin helps you feel connected to others, like a warm hug but faster!
So, if you’re feeling a little down, try giving a friend (or even yourself!) a high five and see if it helps lift your mood.
2. High Fives Help You Believe in Yourself
Scientists at Stanford University found that kids who got high fives as encouragement worked harder and felt more confident. It’s like your brain thinks, “Hey, I must be doing great!”
And here’s something cool—life coach Mel Robbins says you should try high fiving yourself in the mirror every morning. It might sound silly, but your brain sees it as a little boost of confidence, just like if a friend did it.
So next time you feel nervous or unsure, try giving yourself a high five and say, “I got this!”
3. High Fives Make Teams and Friendships Stronger
Think about sports teams—after a great play, what do they do? High five! That’s because high fives help people work better together.
When you high five a friend, a teammate, or even someone who did something awesome in class, you’re really saying:
✅ “Great job!”
✅ “I believe in you!”
✅ “We’re a team!”
It’s a small action, but it makes friendships stronger.
4. High Fives Help You Stress Less
If you’re feeling worried about a test or a tough day, a high five can actually help calm your brain. Touching hands releases chemicals that lower stress and help you feel more relaxed.
So, if you or a friend are feeling nervous, try a high five! It’s a simple way to shake off stress and feel a little better.
Time to Start High Fiving!
Now that you know high fives are scientifically awesome, here’s a fun challenge:
• Give at least 5 high fives today—to friends, family, or even yourself!
• Pay attention to how it makes you feel—happier? More confident?
• Keep doing it—use high fives as a superpower for positivity!
Something so small can make a big difference. So go ahead—high five someone right now! You might just make their day (and yours, too!).
